This stylized version of a double Irish chain pattern was created
entirely from clothing that had been worn by the client's beloved
mother. Often, quilters have achieved differing designs by varying the
placement of light and dark squares of the Irish chain pattern. This
quilt is a unique variation of this pattern resulting in three hearts,
inseparably linked together, symbolizing the way God links family
members, both in this life and in the hereafter.
Each T-shirt and sweatshirt was cut and displayed in such a manner
that the embroidered and stamped designs were highlighted. At the
center dip of each heart the actual neckline of a shirt was
incorporated to achieve a 3-D effect. The variation in textures in this
quilt makes it not only colorful, but also soft and cuddly.
The hearts were outline quilted in a scallop pattern. The watercolor
pink squares along the outside create a pieced zig-zag border. The
outline quilting on this area emphasizes its border characteristics.
Also incorporated in the quilting is a Greek Cross and a steaming
bowl of piroghies, both of which celebrate the heritage of the client's
mother.
This quilt was machine pieced, quilted and embroidered on cotton
batting. It measures 73" x 64".
