An Art quilt sampler table runner
|
Hope Whispers
When Hospice of the Comforter in Orlando, Florida, was considering
commissioning Heart to Heart Celebration Quilts as the creator of a
quilt to be presented at their Bohemian Ball and Auction, the selection
committee requested a sample of my work. Having met with one of the
committee members who viewed a few of my quilts and who clearly
preferred the style of the art quilt, this free flowing sampler was made to
highlight as many artistic styles and motifs as could be contained in its
small 29" x 19" size. It contains hand and machine stitching. Home
decorator fabrics were primarily used - a clear departure from traditional
quilts - because we knew that the fabrics donated for this project would
be home dec.
Although not planned for this purpose, as it turned out, this piece
matches the decor in Claudia's home, so it has a permanent place as the
table runner on her dining room table.
See close ups with explanations below:

The large open flowers were stuffed in the trapunto style and outline
quilted in gold metallic threads. (See more about trapunto here.) Colorful
beads make the center of a quilted butterfly and decorative embroidery
stitching was added on the metallic gold fabric that ribbons across the
piece.
In this section butterflies and flowers are appliquéd in the broderie purse
style. Their background area is hand painted and machine quilted in a
stipple. To the upper right of the butterflies is a portion of a russet fabric that
ribbons diagonally across the piece. On this ribbon various methods of
embroidery and hand painted lettering are used for the quote:
When you think you cannot go further, hope whispers, "just one more step"
Below is the bottom part of that ribbon.

Here is a small patch of pleats formed by fabric folding. Beads are hand sewn at each point.
