Ko itten (Touch of Scarlet) Color of Beauty and Happiness
An Elegant Art Quilt Gift
Heart to Heart
Celebration Quilts
Original Design

This is an HTH Celebration Quilts original design made for a dear client
to present to her sister, celebrating her 80th birthday. Her sister loves
all things Japanese. This shoji screen with three beautiful Geisha
seems just the perfect gift.
The quilt incorporates many Japanese symbols and motifs. The quilt
name itself, "Ko itten" means "Touch of Scarlet" in Japanese and red,
obviously used extensively in this design, is a color that denotes beauty
and happiness in Japan. The quilting designs consist of eternity
circles, orchids and Gingko leaves. Some of the fabrics highlight
Chrysanthemums, which are a sacred flower with the power of eternal
life, according to Japanese legend.
The Geisha themselves are full of Japanese culture. Geisha means
"artist" and as such, each is trained in ancient dance, singing, playing
instruments, flower arrangement, tea ceremony, calligraphy,
conversation and alcohol serving manners. Their typical hairstyle as
shown on this quilt is "shimada". Their attire is "kimono", a layered
formal dress, and the waistband as shown on one of the Geisha is "obi".
This beautiful art quilt is machine pieced and quilted on cotton batting.
It is embellished with hand-sewn beading and fabric paints. Quilting
with metallic threads further embellishes the Geisha. See detail below.
